The Planes Watershed Research Project connects the efforts of Pronatura Noroeste (PNO) and the San Diego Natural History Museum (TheNat) in collaboration with scientists from all over Mexico to measure ecosystem response and resilience based on the management and results of hydrological restoration that has been conducted for more than 10 years in the region.

An expedition for the preservation
of water and biodiversity

Discover!

This Mexican endemic cardon is a keystone species for 21 birds, 27 insects, eight mammals and three reptiles, which use it in a unique way.

New species!

In 2013 a new species of giant spider, now known as the Cacachilas Wandering Spider, was discovered.

Amazing fact!

This amblypygid species was first described in 1863 from the observation of a female. However, it took 142 years before Dr. Maria Luisa Jimenez found and described a male.
Areas of study

Conservation begins with knowledge

Through ongoing collaborative research with experts in botany, birds, reptiles, insects, mammals, as well as  water specialists from the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS),  we conduct systematic sampling and in-depth analysis to gather information on various aspects of biodiversity and hydrology.

Environmental Education

With science for a
sustainable future

Visiting scientists, researchers from the Centro de Investigaciones del Noroeste (CIBNOR), Fauna del Noroeste (FAUNO), academics from the Universidad Autónoma de Baja California (UABC) and the Universidad Autónoma de la Universidad de Baja California Sur (UABCS), as well as students and volunteers, become facilitators during the environmental education lessons by sharing their valuable experience with the Kumutú STEAM explorers and residents of nearby communities.
